simwalk, the pedestrian simulation software

SimWalk - Latest Features

Latest developments of SimWalk software are listed here chronologically.

Developments in Version 3.2

New ticket office / turnstile object

  • Ticket office / turnstile object: This new object allows to easily implement and simulate service time dependent person / passenger separation as for example for ticket offices or turnstiles. An integrated counter allows to measure and display passenger flow rates.
  • Advanced option settings: Users have now the possibility to individually adjust signal tones and ballon hint settings in options menu.
  • New projects folder: Projects are now saved to the User "Documents" folder and not as previously in the program folder.  This avoids the disadvantage that acces rights are restricted for standard users.
  • Demo and test projects: New demo projects included in SimWalk PRO trial version allow to test all the powerful features of SiMWalk PRO. Test cases allow users to verify simulation results with real world behavior.
  • Improved installation technology: A new setup methode provides full use of security improvements available in Window Vista such as User Accounts Control (UAC). UAC protects a system during installation in Vista.
  • Reliability and security: SimWalk 3.2 integrates more compatibility, reliability and security when running on Windows Vista systems.

Developments in Version 3.1

SimAnalyse Modul

  • SimAnalyse modul for statistical analysis of simulation results delivers additional functionalities.
  • General agent statistics: General data tables - exportable to Excel - regarding travel distances and travel times, among other pedestrian data.
  • Delay time statistics: Statistic table indicating differences between desired and actual walking speed (useful for example in public transport simulation to analyse schedule suitability).
  • Counters statistics: All counters data are stored and retrieved for analysis. Counters can be set at any location in the simulation plan to capture analysis data at that location, for example regarding pedestrian counting.
  • Flow rate statistics: Counter data also include flow rate analysis of pedestrians, indicating how many pedestrians have crossed a certain area per unit time (useful for example to numerically analyse congestions and high densities).
  • Improved SimDraw functionality: SimDraw 3.1 includes additional features to ease importing and working with CAD plans.

Developments in Version 3.0

Database

  • New (Windows Access based) database for storing and analyzing simulation results
  • Saving of counter values with run time in database

Objects

  • Newly added escalator and elevator objects with respective functionalities
  • New object 'Delay area' with constant or relative speed reduction [cm/s or ft/min]
  • New parameters 'frequency', 'capacity' and 'open time' for waiting and exit areas
  • New parameter 'speed limit' for delay areas and escalators
  • 3D interconnection objects for stairs, escalators etc.
  • Drawing of stairs, elevators, and escalators as graphic from symbol library
  • Show or hide objects (areas, stairs, elevators...) while simulation is running

Simulation + Analysis

  • Extended features for statistical analysis of simulation results with SimAnalyzer
  • Integrated batch mode for multiple simulation runs and analysis
  • Improved performance due to non-display batch mode
  • Evacuation / run time clock for improved evacuation analysis
  • Normal (Gaussian) distributed random numbers instead of linear method
  • Improved performance for drawing agents, trails, and density/load cells
  • Select density or space representation method

Miscellaneous

  • Integrated workload indicator for simulation engine and database server
  • New Level of Service categories 'HCM 2000' and 'HBS 2001'
  • Improved video compression and optimization
  • Select metric or imperial unit system
  • New license procedure

Developments in Version 2.0

  • SimWalk 2.0 is a major step in agent-based pedestrian simulation, improving predictive and analytical capabilities, flexibility and user friendliness of SimWalk software technology . Version 2.0 delivers, among many others, the following improvements compared to version 1.6:

  • Multi-level capability: SimWalk now allows to model multi-storey buildings, multi-level public facilities or other complex environments with multiple levels.
  • Stairs, escalators, elevators: Version 2.0 supports different level interconnection objects like stairs, escalators and elevators.
  • Integrated CAD tool: To improve handling of simulation plans, version 2.0 integrates SimDraw, a full range CAD tool , including all the know CAD software functionalities. SimDraw allows to adapt simulation plans quickly to different simulation scenarios with additional visual attractiveness.
  • Pedestrian Database Modul: Looking for reliable input data and guidance for your simulation study? The new optional Pedestrian Database modul delivers comprehensive reference data, formulas and general information from international pedestrian research studies.
  • Simulation visualization with two displays: To enhance simulation visualization, version 2.0 provides two separat simulation displays than can be adjusted independently.
  • Pedestrian Counter: Implementation of a pedestrian counting object that allows to count pedestrian flows at any location desired within the simulation plan.
  • Background picture: Integration of real aerial pictures for simulation studies possible.
  • Zooming: Version 2.0 provides stepless zooming capabilities to visualize any detail of simulation plans and simulation runs.
  • Pedestrian analysis: Extended functionalities with "Agents", "Densities", "Trails" and "Loads" pedestrian analysis and visualization commands.
  • Enhanced graphics and visualization: SimWalk 2. 0 allows to adjust graphically all simulation parameters and objects for impressive client presentations.

Developments in Version 1.6

  • SimWalk 1.6 delivers more predictive power and richeness of numerical and graphical output analysis in an easier-to-use application
  • Test report of simulation runs - SimWalk 1.6 allows to generate a printable test report for every simulation run to improve analysis and simulation overview.
  • Configuration of "Fast" and "Precise" simulation runs - the "preview mode" for pedestrian simulation, the "Fast" default command allows faster than real time speed to evaluate the general setting of a specific simulation scenario.
  • Zoom factor adjustable - the zoom factor or the resolution factor of the CAD drawing can be adjusted by the "Drawing width" in creating a new project.
  • Improved saving of simulation runs - the extended "Completion" window after simulation runs allows to attribute run specifications and anaysis (test report).

Developments in Version 1.4.2

  • Start range for pedestrians - in addition to specify single start points of pedestrians or pedestrian groups, it is now possible to specify a rectangular start range. Within the specified range, the pedestrian start locations are distributed randomly. This feature is well suited for scenarios with unknown start coordinates - for example the evacuation of an urban place or the lobby of a cinema complex.
  • SimWalk now supports all the most common AutoCAD entities like LINE, POINT, RECTANGLE, POLYLINE, CIRCLE, ARC and POLYGON.
  • Improved "Settings" window - the generic parameters of a simulation run can now be set comfortably in the new "Settings" window.
  • Editing and deleting agents, agent groups, start and exit points has been significantly improved.
  • Configuration of Setting Parameters allows to simulate pedestrian simulation faster than real time speed.
