Stadium Evacuation Simulation

Sports Arena Lucerne, Switzerland 2010
Savannah Simulations AG conducted an evacuation and egress simulation study of the new "Sports Arena Luzern", Switzerland. The planned stadium with 16'000 seats will be finished in winter 2010.
Simulation of evacuation dynamics is a complex task, taking into account environmental, physical as well as psychological factors. Counter intuitive crowding and blocking phenoma inside the stadium can be revealed with pedestrian simulation.
SimWalk PRO, the pedestrian simulation software for evacuation studies, allows to adjust enviromental as well as behavioral factors of spectators during egress to analyse realistically evacuation scenarios.
One of the significant results of the evacuation simulation was the fact that stadium exits, especially turnaround space in front of the exits, were too narrowly designed to allow safe egress under high pedestrian pressure. Stadium exits were redesigned to improve flow rates and decrease potentially dangerous pressures.

Evacuation Simulation of a Multiplex Cinema
To simulate the complex interactions between cinema visitors and waiting people outside the cinema rooms during an emergency case - for example the outbreak of a fire in one of the cinemas - was the goal of the simulation study with SimWalk software. Different scenarios with an instant warning time or a delayed evacuation behavior were conducted to evaluate the consequences for evacuation times.

Casino Evacuation Simulation
An evacuation study of a big casino room conducted in Argentina revealed - in addition to overall egress time - the unexpected influence of small objects as chairs or trolleys on egress time. If left behind in the middle of major escape routes, though small, these objects prolonge egress time significantly.

Consequently, to clear assigned or planned major escape routes from all obstacles is a major concern of building security managers.
