Urban Planning


Impact of pedestrian detour at Zurich main station (Switzerland) - ASE GmbH, a swiss based simulation and engineering company, conducted a feasibility study at Zurich main station. A planned pedestrian detour of an existing pedestrian crossing had to be simulated to understand and improve possible impacts on traffic light signaling and pedestrian / vehicle interaction.



Simulating the Circumambulation of the Ka'aba using SimWalk -The study of

circumambulation of the Ka’aba is taken as an illustrative example of pedestrian flow problems: 1. A large number of pedestrians causes crowd congestion, leading to disasters as pedestrians push into each other. 2. Entry into the Tawaf area is unlimited causing pilgrims to flow in from various directions at the same time.

This simulation study was conducted by engineers of the Universiti Sains Malaysia and the College of Applied Science, Umm Al-Qura University, Saudi Arabia.




Crowd control for Mecca pilgrimage (Saudi Arabia) - Analysis of the influence of obstacles, crowd control and area extension on Levels of Service at Tawaf area. This simulation study was conducted by engineers of the King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia.

Pedestrian flows train station Oerlikon (Switzerland) - Analysis and visualization of pedestrian flows, depending on different planned train station upgradings. This case study was conducted by Ernst & Basler Partner AG.



Lyon metro safety simulation (France) - Egis Rail conducted in Lyon a pedestrian simulation analysis of passengers transferring simultaneously between 2 metro lines via an underground passageway .
